Colorado Crossroads 3 day tournament - January 31/February 2
Colorado Crossroads Jan 31 – Feb 2
Day 1
Under the guidance of Head Coach Blase, day 1 found us playing the AM wave in the 17’s Classic Division at the Colorado Convention Center. Our first match had us facing the Panther 17 team who was weaker in both player skill and team systems. We were not tested and won easily in two sets 25-10, 25- 9. Our 2nd match was against a Texas team much closer to us (NNJ 17) and we lost in a hard fought 3 set match 25-22, 22-25, 8-15. This match gave much needed confidence to us and conformation that we indeed could compete in the division against solid VB teams without our main outside hitter Pooja. We used that knowledge to play a strong Colorado team (CO Force 17) and win in two strong sets 25-7, 25-18. These results kept us in the championship bracket for day two where we would meet some of the best teams in the division.
Day2
Our first match was against a very strong Texas team (Outlaws 17). Even though they were at a similar level to us, it was hard for us to play consistent offense and defense required to win points. They ran off to a 21-0 lead in the first set! Head coach Blase asked the team at that point to pull their heads out just play normal VB. They responded with good VB losing the set 7-25. We won the 2nd set 25-19 but could not find the energy in the 3rd set losing 8-15.and sets resulting in a 2 set loss 21-25, 18-25. Our 2nd match of the morning was against a 16’s team from Northern California (3CVBC) who played with precision and handed us our second loss of the day in two sets 13-25, 13-25. Our last match was against the top team (undefeated) in our pool the Core VBC 17’s from Colorado. We discussed how this team would play differently and how we could counter their efforts! The first set was excellent VB on both sides of the net with great play by us to secure a 27-25 nail bitter. They responded with a 17-25 victory in the second. Then came our best play of the day! We ran out to a 14-1 lead with exceptional serving, offense and defense to win that decider 15-3. When shaking hands at the end the opposing coach said nobody had ever beaten their team so soundly in such an important match before! This result put us in the Bronze Division for Championship Day.
Day 3 Bronze Championship Round
The team came ready to play and win! Facing another Texas team (Texas Serve 17) both teams played well and wanted the victory to move on. Like the morning before, we traded points back and forth winning the first set 25-21 and then letting up in the second losing 15-25. We put our foot down in the 3rd set to capture the victory 15-10. We now had the momentum and belief in ourselves to play E3VB 17 a team from New Mexico for the division championship. The team found it’s form to once again play very solid VB and capture the title in two sets 25-16, 25-21.
Overall, the team won 5 matches lost 3 to teams who finished 3rd ,5th and 5th in the final standings. We beat all of our Colorado opponents and played in 4 matches that went to 3 sets winning 2 of them! All I can say is well done ladies! The team has much to be proud of and we have learned much about what is needed to prepare the 16s players who were included in that 17s team for their Title Defense in Phoenix in 2 weeks!
