Colorado Challenge 3 day tournament - January 18/20
Day 1
Under the guidance of Head Coach Pasky, day 1 found us playing in the afternoon wave in the 16’s Elite Division at the Norco facility. Our first 2 matches had us facing much superior teams in both player skill and team systems. We struggled to find our game and lost both matches in similar score lines 25-15, 25-9 and 25-16, 25-10. Our 3 rd match was against a team much closer to us (VC Denver 16 Black) and we won in a hard fought match 26-24, 25-21. This match gave much needed confidence to us and conformation that we indeed could compete in the Elite division against solid VB teams.
Day2
Day 2 found the 16Z and 15Z playing at the same times so Coach Blase was elevated to Head Coach for the 16Z. Our first match was against our local rival Relentless Volleyball Club. Even though they are at a similar level to us, it was hard for us to play consistent offense and defense required to win points and sets resulting in a 2 set loss 21-25, 18-25. We talked as a team on what was needed going forward and agreed to commit to those changes. The second match found us refocused and playing against FCA One 16. We had never seen or played against this team before. We played much better but still dropped the 1st set 20-25. We knew that we could compete with this team and raised our effort levels to win the 2nd set 25-23. Now for the 3rd and deciding set! This set found the 16Z’s playing their best VB to date and ran off point after point to create a 14-2 score at the opponent’s last timeout! This was a great moral booster for us and we finished them off with a 15-5 score line.
Our final match of the day found us playing the Rocky Elite 16 in a very quiet facility as we were the only court still competing. After 2 days of constant noise, it was as if we were back in our gym on a Friday night scrimmage. This was our hardest fought match with both teams fighting hard for points! First set found us on top at it’s end and winning 27-25. Second set was the reverse with our opponent winning 27-25 after the 16Z’s served for 2 match points but could not seal the win! With all that hard play we simply ran out of energy and skill and lost the deciding 3 rd set 7-15. This result put us in the consolation bracket for the final day.
Day 3 Championship Round
The team came ready to play and win! Facing Club V 16 Red both teams played well and wanted the victory to move on. Like the night before, we traded points back and forth until we put our foot down at the end of each set winning 25-22, 25-22. We now had the momentum and belief in ourselves to played VC Denver for the second time in the tournament. VC Denver was looking to revenge their loss to us on day 1 and came out playing very strong! They won the first set 25-21. Regrouping and making some changes to our offense and defensive strategies we lifted our game and returned the favor to win the second 25-20. Coach Blase reminded the team of how it feels to win the final match of a tournament and that this set was ours to win. We fought hard and found our game at the end of the set to win 15-13! The team has much to be proud of and we have learned much about what is needed to prepare for the Phoenix tournament in 4 weeks time!
